I heard someone say that you should never judge a new rapper by their first radio single.

Jesus, wasn’t that true with B.o.B… (Haterzzz er’where we go)

Anyway, I think I found a group who actually broke that mold. Let’s just hope their next few singles don’t tank because I like this one…

Please don’t say, “Mark, they’ve been around a minute! You don’t know anything, they even have other videos!” True, but this is the first one I see on MTV regularly.

Take that.

You think Bobby Ray’s gonna start being the go-to hook guy now that Nate Dogg’s on the way out?

I think this song will do better than the “Body Marked Up” track that was out almost a year ago. I left Phoenix in 2006, and I never once heard the hip-hop stations out there bump Willy Northpole. Maybe that’s why his MySpace says ATL now.

That or I left PHX too early.

B.o.B. is a monster live; the energy of his group matches that new name well (it sounds like a rock name, I think). His live band went in, and so did Bob at the TSS/Nah Right showcase Friday. Before he started, and before this clip starts, he seemed like he was getting really worked up over the rumors of his retirement. What follows was this. Too bad you weren’t there.

I guess it’s better to do this now, rather than when your record is out and you’re trying to cross over? All I want to know is who is going to help me retag all the B.o.B. posts to “Bobby Ray.” As a matter of fact, I’m not doing any of that til I see it for myself at SXSW.

Knowing the way B.o.B. sounds, and where he wants to go, I’m going to go ahead and say I like the idea. It’s got a quirky southern-rock/blues edge to it, and I love the fact that someone is going that direction, instead of going so electronic and autotune’d that he renamed himself to “Buzz Lightyear.”

Even though he’s been frustrated with the business of making music in the past, B.o.B said one of his biggest supporters has been the guy he’s signed to: T.I.

“We’ve been talking about the direction I’ve been going musically and really getting everybody on the same page,” B.o.B explained. “As I’m learning what it means to be an artist in the music industry, I’m learning more. At the same time, I’m still learning how to keep that creativity for what I see. I manifest that that into my music and where it’s taking me. It’s taking me to places and venues and areas I never imagined before.

….

B.o.B’s new sound has involved a lot of instrumentation and a rock-and-roll edge.

“Now I go by the name ‘Bobby Ray.’ Make sure you put ‘Bobby Ray,’ ” the MC revealed. “I’m really going into a new direction — more free and not trying to live up to any particular genre. I don’t feel like I’ve been doing that. I don’t feel like I’ve been trying to fit in, but I feel even more free-spirited. I have more willingness musically. That’s all I’m about. I’m about guitars, chords and keyboards.”

To be honest, I didn’t pay much attention to whatever rumor I heard about this. I’m glad he cleared it up, although I don’t think I would have thought twice if he didn’t… this man ain’t “retiring.” You can’t pull a Jay/Lupe til you AT LEAST have 3 albums… or maybe 6 mixtapes in today’s world. I don’t think Google has an album-to-mixtape converter, so don’t quote me.

DOWNLOAD: B.o.B. - Don’t Break My Heart
LISTEN:

Last time, it was the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” that he flipped into “Lonely People.”

This time, B.o.B. used The Foundations hit, “Build Me Up Buttercup” for the hook on his latest track “Don’t Break My Heart.”

Not bad, I’m still taking “Lonely People” over this, though.

This was a little unexpected, but definitely welcome, especially considering the video for “I’ll Be In the Sky” is blowin’ up right now. If you haven’t heard the track, it’s one of the better ones (and my favorite) off the Who the Fuck is B.o.B.? mixtape.

I hope Michael Jackson (or whoever owns the Beatles catalog these days) doesn’t try and sue B.o.B. for the sample. He isn’t directly profiting from the song, because it’s from a mixtape, but that doesn’t mean people won’t try and get a quick buck these days. There were grumblings not too long ago of someone who was trying to bring a case against artists who sample on mixtapes and songs they aren’t selling, arguing the songs build the artist’s profile and they subsequently profit from that. Girl Talk may have changed that though.

Anyway, peep B.o.B. and support the man.

Video dropped yesterday and it’s already on the MTV Jams rotation, not bad. I don’t know what I expected to see in the video, but I like it.

Peeped this over at Nah Right a few minutes ago. I show B.o.B. a lot of love here, but I think it’s deserved.

I’m ready to hear that full album, B.o.B.

I love it. Almost as good as T-Pain’s video, maybe better.
