Every time I see something like this, my cotdamn soul feels good. It’s hard to imagine hip-hop without The Roots. Here’s some footage of them performing with the Boot Camp Clik at their weekly show at the Highline Ballroom in NYC. I know the stans know about the performances by now, but they’ll always be worth mentioning to me.

The Roots have been playing a weekly show at the Highline Ballroom (called The Jam), and as can be seen above, have a tendency to bring special guests. Here’s some footage of Joe Budden’s appearance last week, courtesy of OkayPlayer.

XXL Mag announced this morning that Blu is currently recording a track with The Roots for their new album, How I Got Over, due out in June.

I had no idea The Roots had an album coming out again so soon. Funny how that gets shuffled to the back when there’s so much music to download daily.

Another Jimmy post minus Jimmy. Poor guy.

The amount of performance possibilities with The Roots and things like this are going to keep that show on… solely on the basis of online views from hip-hop sites.

They’re definitely a part of the show, especially with his new “Slow Jam the News” segment. I like it.

I saw reactions all day like “Who Knew Black Thought could sing?”

I have nothing to add to that.

Not that it wasn’t already official, but here’s your in-the-flesh proof that The Roots have arrived to late night. Either way, Jimmy has to introduce The Roots to the old folks who still who are having trouble making that digital transition.

The Roots, come March 2009, will retire from touring, according to the video above (which is working sometimes and not others- my apologies). They’re going to become the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s show when he takes over NBC’s Late Night, when Conan O’Brien moves into Jay Leno’s spot.

If you haven’t seen them live, get on that. It’s definitely one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. I’m sure the retirement won’t be in effect forever, but for a band that toured as much as The Roots, this is some news.
